About Speaker
Professor Vinod Kumar Singh is a Professor Emeritus at IIT Kanpur and holds an Institute Chair position. He currently serves as Chairperson of Management Council, JNCASR, Bengaluru; Chairperson of the CSIR-RAB; and Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati. Professor Singh’s research interests lie in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, with a strong emphasis on asymmetric synthesis. He has received several prestigious awards and honours, including the Swarnajayanti Fellowship (1998), the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2004), and the Padma Shri (2014). He is an elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (FNA), the Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc), the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), and the World Academy of Sciences (FTWAS). He serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry, Tetrahedron Letters, and Organic Chemistry Frontiers. Previously, he served as Editor of Tetrahedron Letters (2014–2023), Associate Editor of Synthetic Communications (2010–2014), and as a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Organic Letters and The Journal of Organic Chemistry (2018–2024). Professor Singh has made substantial contributions to the management of higher education institutions and to higher education policy in India. As the Founding Director of IISER Bhopal (2008–2018), he played a pivotal role in establishing the institute and developing its campus from inception. He has also served as Mentor Director of IISER Berhampur, Director (additional charge) of SPA Bhopal, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of NITTTR Bhopal, and, in an additional charge, Director of MANIT Bhopal. In recognition of his contributions to institution building and the development of scientific infrastructure, he received the TWAS–CASAREP Award in 2020. Professor Singh also served as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India (SAC to PM: 2009–2014). Additionally, he was President of the CRSI (2020–2023) and Chairperson of the Governing Council of the IACS Kolkata (2021–2024). He was also a member of the CSIR Society and provided mentorship to CSIR–AMPRI Bhopal and CSIR–IIIM, Jammu.
Abstract
Creativity in Asymmetric Catalysis Asymmetric catalysis is one of the most powerful strategies for the synthesis of enantiomerically enriched molecules, which are essential in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials. The development of asymmetric catalytic reactions often requires innovative thinking in catalyst design, mechanistic understanding, and reaction engineering. This lecture will highlight how creative approaches in catalyst development and reaction design have enabled the efficient synthesis of complex chiral molecules. Emphasis will be placed on strategies such as the design of chiral ligands for metal catalysts, the development of organocatalysts, and the discovery of new asymmetric transformations. Selected examples from our laboratory will illustrate how subtle modifications in catalyst structure and reaction conditions can lead to remarkable improvements in activity and enantioselectivity.
